Datos principales
• Si el consumo de cigarillos por parte de adultos se redujera en un 50% para el 2020, se podrían prevenir unos 180 millones de muertes antes del 2050.
• La mayoría de los fumadores quiere dejar de fumar pero pocos tienen éxito.
• El dejar de fumar produce efectos beneficiosos para la salud inmediatos y a largo plazo.
• El asesoramiento sobre el abandono, las líneas de ayuda y los tratamientos farmacológicos y de conducta son intervenciones eficaces.
• Los servicios para dejar de fumar están totalmente disponibles para tan sólo el 5% de la población mundial.
• Los servicios para dejar de fumar deben formar parte de un programa exhaustivo de control del tabaco.
